The third round trip to Dens Park is City's reward for last night's thrilling 5-4 win at Brechin City.

Gavin Price's team will head for Dundee on the weekend of September 7 and 8.

The date is yet to be determined, with both Dundee and Dundee United being drawn at home meaning one of them will play on the Sunday.

Remaining Highland League survivors Formartine United, who shocked Peterhead with a penalty shoot-out win at Balmoor Stadium, have been drawn at home to Northern Irish side Glenavon.

Striker Kane Hester was Elgin's hat-trick hero on a remarkable night at Glebe Park.

The Moray side got off to a flyer with Shane Sutherland netting his ninth of the season inside a minute, and Hester making it 2-0 in the third minute.

Brechin hit back with goals by Scott Reekie and Jonathan Page to level ten minutes before the break.

Hester quickly restored the visitors' lead with a superb finish into the top corner, only for Reekie to notch his second and finish a pulsating first half at 3-3.

Two goals in a minute midway through the second half put Elgin in control of the tie.

Firstly Caley Thistle loan teenager Daniel MacKay grabbed his first goal for the club in only his second appearance with a thumping finish.

Then Hester cracked home a left-footer for his sixth of the campaign to complete his treble.

Elgin had to endure a nervy end when Reekie also notched his hat-trick goal in the final minute.
