“We are still really early in our preparations and we are not going to come up against a team this season that is going to move the ball with the tempo of Hibs,” he said, “the movement, rotation and slickness of play.”

Hale admitted his side looked ragged in the second half when they conceded three goals in just eight minutes against the Edinburgh full-timers but there were also positives to take from the game.

“There were good things which hopefully the supporters saw. We are not going to have a lot of time on the training pitch the first couple of weeks, with games Saturday-Tuesday.”

However, he said the beauty of the league cup format is that it pitches you against opposition from higher leagues.

“You get to come up against good opposition which allows you to work on things in and out of possession. We have to use this time to work on a couple of things and get minutes into the whole group.”
