Hanging on to the shirt - Paul Kaczan is set to extend his stay at Borough Briggs

A HANDFUL of Elgin City players are on the verge of penning new contracts to remain at Borough Briggs.

Assistant boss Barry Wilson revealed that Craig Gunn, Craig Frizzel, Mark Nicholson and Jamie Duff have all verbally agreed deals.

And he is confident that skipper Paul Kaczan will also be back at Borough Briggs next season.

"Kaz has been offered a new deal and I think he is happy with it. It will be good to have his experience," he said.

City hope to have some new faces in the ranks when pre-season training gets under way next Saturday.

And Wilson also revealed that the club is is discussions to secure season-long loans of players from SPL clubs.

Ross Jack’s No.2 admitted the inability to secure any short-term loan signings from the likes of Inverness Caley or Ross County in the January transfer window was possibly pivotal in being unable to sustain a promotion push.

"It was disappointing we didn’t manage to get anybody from either of those clubs to help out.

"In January, we were probably just a couple of players short at the end of the day when we needed that extra push and that might have made the difference. They weren’t able to help us at the time due to squad injuries."

City did make an approach to former Caley defender Stuart Golabek but missed out on his signature to Highland League Brora Rangers, who were able to sweeten the deal with the offer of a job outside football.

"We are in for another left-sided player and hopefully we can get him signed up in the next couple of weeks," said Wilson.

City will also be hosting open trials on June 25 in a bid to unearth potential additions to the squad.

Wilson himself is likely to step back from the playing side this season, although will go through pre-season personally as well as taking the training.

"I will make a big effort to make sure I am fit, but I will be there more for a case of emergencies. I don’t see myself playing regularly."

The Borough Briggs club have been handed a tough draw away to East Fife in the first round of the Scottish Communities Cup, which is played on Saturday, July 30.
