Russell Dingwall’s missed penalty at 2-0 proved costly, with the Binos soon adding to their lead to inflict more damage on the visitors.

City boss Allan Hale brought in Ross Draper for his first start since October and took Kian Leslie back in the team, with Lewis Hyde and Ryan Sargent dropping out.

Stirling are the only side to beat Elgin in the league at Borough Briggs this season - a 4-2 success in December - and they weathered a good Elgin start to score twice in quick succession in the first half.

Dale Hilson headed home an Adam Brown cross on 29 minutes and before the away side could recover they were 2-0 down when Jack Harkness forced home from close range.

Elgin were put under the cosh for the remainder of the first half, prompting Hale to make a triple substitution at the break.

Dajon Golding, Leslie and Kyle Girvan made way for Hyde, Olly McDonald and recent loan signing Jack MacIver.

There was a big chance for City to get back in it before the hour mark when Lyall Booth won a penalty, but Russell Dingwall blasted his kick wide.

Within five minutes they were further in arrears as brown fired home a fine finish from the edge of the box.

Draper did get one back for Elgin with a header on 70 minutes, but there was too much to do for the visitors to salvage anything from the game.

Leaders East Fife extended the gap between themselves and City in third back to eight points with a 1-0 win at Spartans. while second-placed Peterhead won 4-3 at Bonnyrigg Rose.
