Elgin City sign former Hibernian striker Josh O’Connor, son of ex-Scotland international Garry who is his mentor in football

Elgin City’s latest signing is willing to move from Edinburgh to Moray to make the move work.

The Black and Whites have completed the signing of striker Josh O’Connor, son of former Scotland international Garry.

The 21-year-old spoke in his first interview about being so keen to make his mark at Borough Briggs that he is setting up home in Moray.

And manager Allan Hale believes O’Connor’s pace and experience for such a young player can make him a notable capture.

O’Connor, like his father, started with Hibs and made a handful of appearances in the first team, including winning a penalty in a 6-0 win over Aberdeen.

He moved to Airdrieonians on loan where he helped them win the Challenge Cup, and has had spells in Ireland with Dundalk in the south and Crusaders in the north.

The player was understood to have signed for Elgin’s League 2 rivals East Kilbride but the transfer hit complications, and he has instead signed for City.

“Josh is he just needs an environment where he's going to be trusted,” said Hale. “I think he's been a bit unfortunate the last couple of years with injury and as a result of that not really being able to get settled in the team

“You can see that he's got quality and abundance and it's trying to get that out of him on a consistent basis. Hopefully we can give him that platform and that environment that he's looking for.

“I think the fact that he's moved up to Elgin, essentially moving from Edinburgh up to Elgin shows that he's willing to make the commitment to go all in.

“We'll do the same in return to him and that will be what he needs to really go and flourish and get that confidence again. Hopefully he can find that with us and if he does then that's a great signing for us.”
