Elgin City Women on brink of SWFL North title and chance of promotion to League One after wins over Aberdeen and Buchan
Elgin City Women have taken a big step closer to securing the SWFL North league title.
With a perfect record through their first 12 matches, this week has been about fulfilling their games in hand over rivals at the top end of the table.
Last Sunday it was Aberdeen who visited Borough Briggs, but the hosts who got off to a flying start.
Darcy Matheson opened the scoring in just the fourth minute, setting the tone for the afternoon, and further goals from Orla Scott and Ellie Main made it 3-0 to Elgin at half time.
Club top scorer Mia Lundberg would make it 4-0 10 minutes after the restart, with Scott claiming her second of the afternoon just after the hour mark.
Lundberg doubled her personally tally with her 36th goal of the season as a whole to make it 6-0.
Late goals would then follow from Mel MacDonald and Alexa Mann to add cherries on top of a strong performance, sealing an 8-0 triumph in the end.
That result would put Elgin City three points clear at the top of the table with two games still in hand over their nearest challengers, but the next one of those would take place on Wednesday night against struggling Buchan in Peterhead.
Buchan went into the tie knowing that an upset would be the result of the season, given that the home side had lost all 14 of their league games to date.
Perhaps unsurprisingly then, it was another win for Elgin, and in dominant fashion.
It ended up 14-0, with Abi Kennedy opening the scoring in Peterhead in just the third minute.
Lundberg would then take over, scoring four to make it 5-0 by the 18th minute, and Carly Sewell, Sarah Westwood and Lundberg would all score again before half time to make it eight by the break.
Kennedy would claim her second of the evening after the restart, with Ellie Main helping Elgin to double figures by the hour mark.
Emma Craig would score a hat-trick of her own to make it an unlucky 13 for Buchan, before Darcy Matheson finally rounded off the scoring in the 81st minute with Elgin’s 14th and final strike.
Elgin now sit six points clear at the top of the table, and could officially be crowned champions if results go their way this weekend.
Second-placed Grampian travel to fifth-placed Huntly tonight knowing that anything other than a victory would open the door for the Borough Briggs outfit to move into an unassailable lead.
Grampian would only have two matches left to play, so if Elgin can better their result at Dyce on Sunday the title race will be over.
If not, Elgin will have to wait until next week’s home match against Stonehaven to get over the finishing line.
