KANE Hester recalled scoring a hat-trick against last season’s League 2 champions and set out to repeat the feat against this year’s likely title winners Kelty Hearts.

The City striker netted both goals in his team’s impressive 2-0 victory over Scottish Cup giantkillers Kelty tonight.

A year ago he was tormenting the Spiders, who romped to their league success and he was happy that City produced a similar display to see off the Fifers.

“It was pretty much exactly the same performance, the same shape and we played the same way,” he said.

“We pressed so hard and certainly as a team we deserved it.”

Hester broke the deadlock with a typical burst behind the visiting defence and a cool finish on 37 minutes.

And when Darryl McHardy played him through a second time 15 minutes from time, Hester showed terrific composure to dance past several challenges and coolly fire home his 12th goal of the season.

“The first one, I just had to get it out of my feet and hit it,” he said.

“The second one, I’ve tried to take a bit more time and I’ve turned him three or four times trying to get the right shot in.

“In the end I just hit it and hoped. I’m happy with the two goals and hopefully I can kick on from here.”

City boss Gavin Price couldn’t hide his delight as his team produced a complete performance to bring down the table toppers.

“I’m really proud of the players,” he said.

“We asked for three key things tonight; the organisation, the work rate and bravery on the ball - the did all three.

“I’m really pleased with the performance but it’s just three points. It’s a nice three points because of the way the players worked for it but it’s just three points.”

The win extended Elgin’s unbeaten run to six matches and although they remain eighth in League 2, they sit just two points behind fourth-placed Edinburgh.

Next up for Price’s men is a trip to Stenhousemuir on Saturday.
