Elgin Parkrun cancelled on New Year’s Day due to extensive flooding of Cooper Park

The first Elgin parkrun of 2025 has been cancelled due to flooding in the town’s Cooper Park.

Traditionally held on New Year’s Day to help ward off any Hogmanay hangovers, the 5k event won’t take place tomorrow as planned because of safety fears.

Organisers posted pictures on Facebook of the park flooding after heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours.

The first Elgin Parkrun is now scheduled for Saturday at 9.30am, once again subject to weather conditions.

The event started almost nine years ago, with competitors doing two laps starting near the skatepark, looping past the front of the library and out of the park under the Bishopmill Bridge towards Borough Briggs and Moray Leisure Centre before returning to the Cooper Park.

A total of 222 runners finished the Elgin parkrun on Christmas Day, while the most recent one of Saturday was the 367th running of the event.
