Elgin City’s League 2 rivals Dumbarton Football Club set to be liquidated and reformed as a newco
One of Elgin City’s league rivals next season is preparing to go through liquidation.
Dumbarton FC, one of the founding members of Scottish football, entered administration late last year while playing in League 1 and were docked 15 points, triggering their relegation to the fourth tier.
Proposed agreements to bring the Sons out of administration ran out of time for the beginning of the forthcoming 2025-26 campaign.
But a rescue option has been put in place whereby the club will be dissolved and reformed as a newco in a similar move to what Rangers went through in 2012.
The club has been given the go ahead by the Scottish FA and SPFL to play alongside Elgin in League 2 next term as a new company called Dumbarton Football Club 1872 Ltd.
The club is owned by Canadian businessman Mario Lapointe, and has been given a formal waiver by the league to continue next season in the SPFL.
Inverness Caley Thistle also entered administration around the same time as Dumbarton last year and received the same 15-point penalty.
Unlike the Sons, who finished bottom of their division, ICT secured enough points to pull clear of the relegation zone.
