Manchester City star Erling Haaland outscored by Norwegian compatriot Mia Lundberg who closes in on 50 goals in debut Elgin City women’s football season after 12-0 victory
Maybe Erling Haaland isn’t Norway’s most prolific goalscorer after all.
For Elgin City women’s football team striker Mia Lundberg said she would try and outscore the Manchester City ace this season, and she’s done it in style.
Lundberg said in her first interview after joining City at the start of the current SWFL North campaign that her goal was to score as many as her compatriot Haaland, who is regarded as one of the most prolific scorers in the world.
He has netted over 200 domestic and 40 international goals by the age of 24, but this season has been left in the shade by a rising star in women’s football.
Elgin City recently clinched the SWFL North title after an incredible run of victories, and made it 16 wins in 16 league games on Sunday with a 12-0 success over Stonehaven.
Lundberg added to her tally by scoring five times before being substituted just after the hour mark.
The Norwegian wonder has now found the net 46 times for City in just 27 appearances, an average of 1.7 goals per match.
While Haaland has had some record breaking seasons and been a regular on the scoresheet in an injury-hit term, he only recent hit the 30 mark from 39 games in all competitions for Manchester City.
Lundberg is closing in on 50 goals, with two regulation league matches and a promotion play-off to contest over the remainder of the season.
She opened the scoring against Stonehaven after just five minutes and added three more in the first half, with team-mates Sarah Westwood and Darcy Matheson also contributing to a 6-0 half time lead.
An own goal was followed by Lundberg’s fifth strike of the match, and she was immediately substituted to prevent her from doing any more damage to a demoralised visiting side.
But the goals continued, with Lily Morrison - daughter of manager Mike - adding two more and both Orla Scott and Alexa Mann scoring in the final two minutes to complete the rout.
Mann’s effort was Elgin’s 100th league goal of the season in just 16 fixtures, and they have two left to play to try and complete a perfect record of wins - or at the very least stay undefeated.
