The week's play at Forres Bowling Club paled into insignificance on Friday morning when the club heard the devastating news of the passing of 15-year-old member, Caitlin Dustan.

Caitlin Dustan won the triples tournament at Forres last year. The trophy will now be played in her memory.
Caitlin Dustan won the triples tournament at Forres last year. The trophy will now be played in her memory.

Caitlin was a promising young bowler, who, just last season, won her first trophy at the club.

As a mark of respect, the club will rename that trophy the Caitlin Dustan Triples.

A controlled second half performance saw Wilma Petrie, Alana Coutts and Gary Mackie take the plaudits at the first Scott Cup hat-night of the season on Monday night.

Although just leading Alex Porter 6-5 at the halfway stage, the only shots they dropped thereafter were at the final end. Alex' grip on the trophy is slipping already.

If it hadn't been for the fact that Harry Sutherland scored a couple of trebles early on in the proceedings, John Matthews would have finished with the best score as he won 11 of their 16 ends.

Stuart Robertson had a strong first half leading 13-3 against Sandy Burgess, but his opponent, playing his first bowls of the season, clawed things back a bit in the second half.

A good five end mid-game run put Paul Coutts 11-5 ahead of Steve Gill, who finished the stronger of the two.

There were fears for Dean Dobbs after losing a seven to Davie Petrie at the seventh end. To his credit, Dobbs recovered well and was only beaten by a brace at the death.

Scores: G Mackie 19, A Porter 7; J Matthews 20, H Sutherland 10; S Robertson 19, A Burgess 12; P Coutts 15, S Gill 13; D Petrie 18, D Dobbs 16.

The Wednesday afternoon was a tightly contested affair where Mary Sobey and Charlie Watt finished in the top spot. They were the only team to keep on the move, winning all four sets.

Derek Sobey was nine up at the halfway stage, but a mixed second half saw him pipped at the post.

Davie Petrie hit some high scores, but lost half of his ends while Steve Gill was 10-0 up after just three ends but couldn't maintain his progress.

It was the second half before Kevin McWilliam found some form as he tried to recover from a heavy first set loss.

Hazel Caldwell came good in the third set to earn a move, Brian Caldwell lost all four sets and Sam Morrison picked up the wooden spoon despite winning his third set.

Scores: C Watt 13 up; D Sobey 12 up; D Petrie 10 up; S Gill 8 up; K McWilliam 3 down; H Caldwell 11 down; B Caldwell 11 down; S Morrison 18 down.

After suffering an early loss of five shots, Thursday's moving hat-night was won by Lesley Mackintosh, Charlie Watt and Paul Coutts. They scored 16 shots without reply over eight mid-evening ends.

Derek Sobey lost his way after a promising initial half dozen ends, although he almost had a complete recovery when he won his final four ends.

Lesley Coutts was looking like a winner until she lost her final set 6-0, and losing a handful at the penultimate end spoilt John Matthews' chances.

Stuart Robertson was trailing 10-3 before he won all but one of his final seven ends to finish on a positive note.

Although she began well, Mary Sobey was staring defeat in the face until she gained three shots at the death.

Sandy Burgess was 8-2 up after half a dozen ends, but won just a further two ends.

After a topsy-turvy start, Harry Sutherland was all square but he failed to pick up any shots during the last handful of ends.

Alex Porter finally mastered rink 2 in the final set after being there all night!

Although he spent the evening on rink 6, Brian Caldwell finished by winning set number four in style.

Scores: P Coutts 8 up; D Sobey 7 up; L Coutts 6 up; J Matthews 2 up; S Robertson 2 up; M Sobey 2 up; A Burgess 4 down; H Sutherland 5 down; A Porter 9 down; B Caldwell 9 down.

A strong entry to the David Petrie (Handyman) sponsored Forres Open Pairs will ensure that St Catherine's Road is a busy place this weekend.

The District 2 Scottish National Championship qualifiers begin on Saturday. Mary Sobey travels to Keith to compete against an Aberchirder representative in the over-55s ladies singles.

It is local derby time next Tuesday in the over-55s league with Forres make the short journey to Grant Park.
