FORRES Thistle face an important encounter against the league leaders this weekend after losing ground in the promotion chase.
The Jags slipped to a surprise 1-0 defeat to Burghead Thistle last weekend, and will look to bounce back when they face table-toppers Rothie Rovers on Saturday.
The north junior Division Two derby clash at Logie Park was keenly contested, with Forres surviving an early scare when Burghead’s on-loan Lossiemouth player Harry Allen fired a shot off the junction of post and bar.
Kelvin Mackenzie then fired just over for the visitors, while Fraser Forbes went close from 20 yards for Forres.
Forbes was played in by Neil Moir but saw his next effort well saved by keeper Aidan MacDonald.
At the other end, home goalkeeper Daniel McLeod’s punch was lobbed back in by James Fraser, forcing McLeod to make a save.
MacDonald was in good form for Burghead, saving three times in quick succession from Forbes, Mattie Davidson and Moir.
Chances were at a premium in the second half with both teams chasing the opening goal.
Davidson was inches away from connecting with Matty Fraser’s low cross after a run down the left on 64 minutes.
A goal finally arrived on 76 minutes and it was Burghead who got it, Finlay Nicol breaking in from the left side to steer a low finish past McLeod.
