KNOCKANDO athletics group's latest triple jump event was interrupted by a surprise appearance from a group of boozy Teletubbies.

Saturday's competition in the Speyside village was in progress when a hen party dressed up as characters from the BBC children's TV programme arrived on the scene.

Club coach Marjory Swinton said: "A bus drew up across the other side of the field and a number of Teletubbies appeared from the coach.

"They then came onto the field and proceeded to start doing a three-legged race, accompanied by much noise.

"This turned out to be an unauthorised hen party with no permission to be there so they had to withdraw and go elsewhere.

"LaLa and Po clambering back onto the bus was worth a photograph!"

Despite the interruption, the competition produced some good performances from local athletes.

Knockando recently became the first club in the country to host a Scottish Athletics meeting this summer, following the Covid-19 sporting shutdown.

Saturday's entry was smaller than the opening event due to Scottish Athletics starting their open meets down at Meadowhall in East Lothian.

The weather was unusually cold, showery and blustery with a north easterly wind.

Local favourite Kyle Wilkinson (Elgin AAC) had a legal 12.68 metres effort in the under-17s to finish his triple jump season before focussing back on to his long jump.

Close rival and pal, William Hodi (Nairn) was competing at Meadowhall in far nicer weather and jumped 13.76m.

Nairn under-15 Matthew Saunders, in his first ever triple jump competition easily managed 8.86m with club mate Ryan Curran jumping a new PB of 7.93m.

In the same competition, Elgin's Tom Palmer put in a steady series of jumps with 8.51m his best.

The three girls were all just below their best with Abbie Crawford (Banchory/Stonehaven) jumping 10.02m (under-17s), Emma Jones (Elgin) managing 9.81m (under-17s) and Ruby Wittka-Jezewski (Ross County) reaching 9.23m (under-15s).

This Saturday (September 5) sees Knockando host their final open meet of the season, a long jump event with 23 entries.
