The Kynoch Park club announced Donaldson's departure after almost three years at the helm of the club he also played for more than a decade for.

A club spokesperson said the 37-year-old was putting family and work ahead of football in making his decision.

"Dean called chairman, Andy Troup, last night (Saturday) and advised he would have to step down as he needs to take time out from football to concentrate on his family and work commitments," said the club statement.

Donaldson is new Keith manager

A high-scoring midfielder in his Maroons playing career, Donaldson returned to the club in 2017, initially as a coach working with then manager Ewan Robb.

When Robb left the club in January of the following year, 'Deano' - as he was nicknamed at the club - took over and appointment former Keith team-mates Michael Brown and Jamie Lennox as his assistants.

The Maroons finished fourth from bottom that season with just four league wins to their name, before making big progress under Donaldson's charge.

They climbed to 13th in 2018-19, more than doubling their points tally.

During last season's campaign, which ended prematurely due to the coronavirus pandemic, Keith had risen to ninth place and had almost equalled their points tally from the previous year with seven games less played.

The Keith statement added: "We want to thank Dean for all his efforts over the past 3.5 years in helping us transform Keith FC on and off the park, the job he has done along with assistant managers Michael Brown, Jamie Lennox and coach Greig Simmers is amazing and wish him and his lovely family all the best for the future."

Assistant Brown will take temporary charge while the hunt begins for Donaldson's successor.
