KEITH Football Club’s players have decided to continue to work, train and play without pay until the Highland League campaign gets under way.

On the back of the SHFL’s decision to postpone the league until at least November 28, Keith have decided to continue with their pre-season – but players will not be taking any cash until a competitive ball is kicked.

Players and coaching staff at Keith didn’t take any money from the club after lockdown, but were due to be paid again at the start of the new campaign.

Manager Dean Donaldson said the players want to continue playing, but understand the club’s financial predicament.

“The plan is for us to carry on as normal and keep training and playing friendlies until at least the next update,” Donaldson said.

“The decision was made last week. The players are getting their expenses paid, but will not be taking any wage.

“It’s something most of the players are wanting to do – to carry on with training and games – but there is not much we can do financially.

“I feel for the boys because they don’t get paid much at the best of times and now that will be even less.

“But everyone is fed up and ready to get back to playing football.

“The decision to postpone the league is understandable with no fans allowed in, but the players have done pre-season and are fit and ready to go.”
