LOSSIEMOUTH have won Morayshire Bowling’s Alexander Wallace Second Division Championship for the first time in their history.

Lossie have finished in the bottom two for all but one of the last ten years, with this title being the club’s first major honour since winning the Association Triples in 1981.

Secretary Brian Leader joked his club was the Leicester City of the bowling world and paid great tribute to his players.

The club went from strength to strength throughout the season, winning 10 out of their 11 matches, with the final match falling victim to the coronavirus – by which time Lossiemouth were already champions.

Playing at home against Fogwatt, Lossie knew four points out of six would be enough to clinch the title.

Any signs of early nerves were soon diminished as reliable veterans Sandy Wares and Peter Bloomfield hit the ground running and led 10-3 and 10-1 after six ends.

The dominance was to continue in the second half of their matches with surprisingly little response from Fogwatt, who themselves were still in with a chance of the second promotion place.

Bloomfield scored 10 shots in the final four ends for a 21-3 victory, while Wares finished with two doubles to win 17-4.

In-form Ronnie Watt offered some resistance for the visitors, playing consistently in a tight match to win 10-6.

Peter Wilson restored the coastal club’s advantage with excellent bowls in the first seven ends against another in-form player in Gordon Wiles. Wiles could only respond by winning two of the final five ends and Wilson went on to win 19-5 as Lossie clinched their first championship with a terrific 63-22 victory.

Lossie’s closest challengers were Lhanbryde, and they clinched their promotion to the top division with a comfortable 60-35 win over Elgin.

In the week’s third match, Forres Victoria ended Duffus’ promotion efforts and secured their second success of the season at the same time, winning 52-36.

Lossie’s winning team: Peter Bloomfield, Mark Morrison, Dennis Camp, Jim Edwards, Sandy Bruce, Jake Morrison, Norman Grant, Peter Wilson, Brian Leader, Bernhard Howarth, Sandy Wares, Kevin Donaldson, Heather Leader.
