MORAY Marathon winner Gareth Mayze was out of puff as he won the 30th anniversary race but a few short years ago it would have been cigarettes which left him grasping for breath.

The Edinburgh lab technician ditched the fags in 2006 and took up running seriously - and has never looked back.

Mayze (38) was competing in his fourth Moray Marathon.

"I am pleased with my time and it is faster than I have ever run before," he said.

However, he admitted: "The last 10 miles were awful and I had to dig deep and keep going. There was no skill involved just sheer determination.

"I died a death," admitted the Teviotdale Harrier.

A combined field of 750 runners took part in the marathon, half-marathon and 10k on Sunday.

The marathon attracted a record entry of 176 runners, while a waiting list had to be set up for the 10k after the maximum field of 330 runners was reached.

Chairman Donald Brown said running seemed to be going through a resurgence.
