A MARATHON effort from two golfers has raised nearly £1500 for the NHS.

Aaron Stewart, from Lossiemouth, and Scott Lorimer, from Montrose, both 25, played 100 holes at Moray Golf Club in just 18 hours on Monday.

All proceeds from the event are going to NHS Charities Together.

The pair teed off just after dawn, at 4.30am, and came home to finish shortly after 10pm – cheered on by a handful of friends and family as they played the last hole.

Both men walked a total of 50 kilometres – more than a marathon – during the day, or 70,000 steps.

Aaron said: “It was a nice and early rise, and we were five-and-a-half rounds down at 10.10pm – about 10 minutes before we would have needed head torches.

“We had a couple of pals join us during the day – and one boy, Michael Baber, did the last round with us.

“We got a bit of rain, wind and some sunshine – we are both a little bit burnt and slept very well the night after.

“The support was fantastic and we really appreciate it all.

“We are absolutely delighted to have raised £1400 so far, and we still have a few coins to count up that were left for us at the course.”

Aaron’s cousin, Greg Winter, is a paramedic, so he knows more than most just how important a job they are doing during the coronavirus pandemic.

And that was enough motivation to help the duo push through an excruciating last nine holes.

He added: “The standard certainly got worse as the day went on – my best round was a 76 and Scott’s was a 79. The worst was an 89.

“We did a match play, which Scott won 6-4, and that kept us going throughout the day.

“From the 14th hole onwards in the last round I could barely hit a ball, but we had a few boys supporting us which helped.

“The fact we were doing it for a cause as worthy as NHS Charities Together was a big driving force as well.”

Scott was once again keen to thank Moray Golf Club, as well as other players on the day, for their help with the golfing adventure.

“Thanks to Moray Golf Club again for supporting the event,” he said.

"Thank you to everyone we met – who were more than willing to let us through and to everyone that came and supported us.

“Folk watching us on the last hole was nice and it all made the day very worthwhile.”

The pair recorded their adventure and hope to upload some clips to YouTube in the next few weeks.

Donations are still open and can be made at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/asslgolf.
