Weir, who managed Elgin between 2014 and 2017 before spending part of last season on the coaching team, takes over from Steven Mackay, who has left the club due to work and family commitments.

Manager Price was sad to see Mackay leave Borough Briggs, but delighted to have the knowledge and experience of Jim Weir on board.

“Sid (Steven Mackay) made it clear towards the end of last season that, with working in Manchester more often, he would be leaving,” Price said.

“He was struggling to make training and his work-life balance was a struggle. He wanted to give everything if he was in the role.

“I was disappointed to lose Sid, we had a good working relationship and he worked well with the players, so we are sad to see him go.

“But the door won’t close on him, if things change then we’d be keen to work with him again.

“It was a no-brainer in terms of persuading Jim to come in after Sid left.

“He has great experience and he’s great with the players. I worked under him for three years when I came to Elgin eight years ago, we are good friends, we work well together and we know how each other work.”

Speaking to Elgin City’s website, Jim Weir said: “I’m delighted to be coming back on a permanent basis to assist Gavin. I really enjoyed being involved at the end of last season working with the players. The chairman, board, staff and players have always been brilliant to work with also.

“Gavin and myself are great friends and I thank him for the opportunity to help build a successful and exciting team to challenge for promotion in the upcoming season.”

Elgin City’s pre-season schedule starts with a trip to Clachnacuddin on June 18. One new face is involved with pre-season – centre-half Jake Dolzanski, who has joined the club from Jeanfield Swifts.

“Jake is a player we have kept tabs on for a number of years,” Price added.

“We tried to sign him before he went to Jeanfield, so it’s good to get him now.

“He’s gained experience at Jeanfield where he has been player of the year. We are glad we managed to persuade him to come up the road.

“This gives us good competition for places, but we are still looking for a left-back, too.”
