The North Caledonian Football Association confirmed Division One and Division Two fixtures will restart on Saturday, May 29.

The season will restart five months after it was suspended when league officials decided to pause the league in December due to the rising number of cases of coronavirus registered across Scotland.

The Scottish Government is allowing competitive outdoor sport to restart on May 15 when testing is not thought will be required to play football again.

NCFA president Iain Whitehead says the new dates will allow teams to prepare training and play friendly matches before the restart date.

He is confident that the season will be able to finish in June.

“With outdoor sport allowed to restart on May 17, we are looking at continuing the season two weeks after that,” said Whitehead.

“The plan is to start up when we can and see if the fixtures can be played.

“Hopefully it will not take too long to conclude the leagues.

“We have had a meeting with the teams and they say they want to try it.”

NCFA officials are keen to avoid calling the 2020/21 season null and void after being forced to do so during the last campaign.

Clubs voted to scrap the 2019/20 season by six votes to two with no champions being crowned.

Invergordon and St Duthus voted to end the season on a points per game system which would have seen Invergordon crowned champions.

But other clubs in the division, apart from one abstention, voted to cancel last season’s campaign.

The first round of fixtures will take place on Saturday, May 29, with the season concluding on Saturday, June 26.

The decision to continue the season follows the call by the Highland League to concluded their season early on a points per game system.

Brora Rangers were declared champions despite only being able to play three games this season.
