Elgin City women’s football team kick off season with victory in 13-goal thriller at Grampian Ladies helped by debut goal from new Norwegian striker
A goal from their new Norwegian signing helped Elgin City’s women’s team to victory in their first match of the season.
It was a 13-goal thriller at Spain Park in Aberdeen, where Grampian Ladies hosted City in their Scottish Women’s League Cup group stages opener.
With new signing Mia Lundberg in their line-up, the Elgin team got off to a flying start with a second minute goal from Lily Morrison, daughter of team manager Michael ‘Mo’ Morrison.
Grampian quickly equalised before Lyndsey Brown restored the visitors’ lead at the home of Banks o’ Dee FC.
The home side then struck twice in quick succession to grab the advantage going into the half time break, but right on the interval came a big moment in the match.
Lundberg marked her Elgin debut with a goal to level the scores at 3-3.
Within a minute of the restart, Darcy Matheson had fired Elgin back in front and the same player made it 5-3 midway through the half.
Morrison grabbed her second from the penalty spot and when sub Alexa Mann made it 7-3, just eight minutes after replacing Lundberg, City were well on course for victory.
There was still time for Grampian to pull back two goals and set up a tense finish but another Elgin sub Lauren Doherty netted her team’s eighth goal to finally seal victory at 8-5.
Next League Cup match for Elgin is away to Huntly on Sunday.
