A LEGEND of Olympic Taekwon Do was in Moray this week to improve his English and help teach local youngsters in the martial art.

Chu-Mu-Yen, the national Taekwon Do coach of Chinese Tapei, was a guest of Elgin instructor Mark Russell at Focus Martial Arts in Elgin.

As part of a six-month study tour of Scotland, the double Olympic medallist spent a week in Elgin.

"I am looking forward to working with the children and to study English," he said.

He won gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics and went on to secure a bronze at Beijing in 2008.

Now retired from competitive action, he is a national icon in his homeland and respected figure throughout the Taekwon Do world.

Said Russell: "He is a legend in Taekwon Do really. I jumped at the chance to have him up here and it is a great opportunity for the children to learn."

He admitted the speed of Chu-Mu-Yen had wowed local students at his first class in Elgin.

"He was so fast and powerful, they were just amazed," said Russell.

"I used to watch him in competition when I was younger and I was just in complete awe.

"He was one of the best fighters in the world and to have him in Elgin is fantastic."

Both Russell and Chu-Mu-Yen will be involved in a black belt grading in Glasgow this weekend.
