Moray Rugby Club’s women’s team go down fighting against more experienced Orkney side in Arnold Clark Caledonia League Division 2

After a well fought encounter, Moray Women lost out by 24 points to 10 to Orkney Women in their latest Arnold Clark Caledonia League Division 2 fixture at Morriston last Saturday.

The islanders started strongly and camped themselves in the home 22 and in the sixth minute scored a forward try for a 0-5 lead.

Orkney continued to press but good tackling kept them at bay. Moray played themselves more and more into the game and had a good period of pressure in the 22 around the 20 minute mark but unfortunately did not manage to turn this into points.

In the 27th minute, the visitors scored a second try after a break up the blind side from a scrum around half-way created the space to score out wide. The try was converted for 0-12.

The home side returned to the offensive and in the 36th minute they added their first points. Following good driving and continuity play in the 22, the ball reached Kirby Redrup and she broke a couple of tackles to score an unconverted try for 5-12, the half-time score.

Orkney started the second half the brighter but the home defending was resolute. Continued pressure eventually paid and a third converted try was scored for a 5-19 lead.

In the 62nd minute, Moray responded. An offside penalty, 15 metres out, was tapped and run. A number of drives later, Jenna Woods received the ball and burrowed her way over the line for an unconverted try reducing the lead to 10-19.

In the final 18 minutes of the game, both teams went out to their tallies and with only two minutes left, an arching run by the visiting centre saw her run past the defence to score an unconverted try for a final score of 10-24.

Both sides had contributed to a good open and competitive game of rugby. Moray can be pleased with their efforts against a more experienced Orkney team and in particular, their defensive work was excellent.
