The Premiership side bounced back from the loss of an early goal to comfortably win 6-1.

United had won 1-0 at Kelty Hearts in their opening group game while City lost by the same scoreline at home to Arbroath on Saturday.

A fine start by the visitors saw Kane Hester clip the bar with an overhead effort, then go one better by racing on to Conor O'Keefe's through pass to slip the ball wide of keeper Benji Siegrist for a fifth minute goal.

As expected, that sparked a reaction from Dundee United who scored four goals in a 20-minute spell.

Scotland international Lawrence Shankland got the first on 19 minutes after Tom McHale couldn't hold on to Kieran Freeman's cross.

Nicky Clark chipped one over McHale five minutes later and Shankland added his second with a great finish after McHale had twice denied Clark.

Former Aberdeen man Peter Pawlett punished a defensive error to add number four on 40 minutes.

The second half was about damage limitation for Elgin, who brought Matthew Cooper on for his first appearance of the season as a half time sub.

Freeman's angled finish made it five on 55 minutes and when Chris Mochrie tapped in number six midway through the second half, Elgin were desperate to hear the final whistle.

To City's credit they kept pushing with sub Josh Peters firing over and Hester forcing a good save out of Siegrist.

Dundee United: Siegrist. K Smith (Neilson 59), Edwards (Butcher 46), Reynolds, Freeman, Pawlett, Fuchs (F Robson 68), Hoti (Harkes 68), Duffy, Clark, Shankland (Mochrie 58).

Subs not used: Mulgrew, Caves, Carson.

Elgin City: McHale, Mailer, Little, McHardy, MacPhee (Peters 69), R Dingwall, MacEwan (Allen 82), T Dingwall (Sopel 63), Cameron, O'Keefe (Cooper 46), Hester (Lawrence 82).

Subs not used: Hoban.
