McCarthy (27) played almost 200 games for the Caithness side over the past six seasons since signing from Ross County.

Rothes manager Ross Jack had worked with loan goalkeepers Ewan MacDonald (Formartine) and Tommy Dixon-Hodge (Ross County) last season, the former now back at his parent club and the latter moving to England.

"It was an area of the park that we had a problem with and I had to rectify that," said Jack.

"Sean has been in the league for a few years and proved his worth so we're delighted to have him on board."

Over the lockdown period Rothes lost three players with Dale Wood joining Forres Mechanics, Jack Maley leaving due to his work commitments down south and Jamie Duff quitting the club having had problems with a knee injury last term.

In addition, striker Steven Anderson won't join the squad for another two months due to his employment furlough, and keeper Robbie Donaldson is also staying at home for a period after his wife gave birth recently.

"My concerns are for the well-being of the players and the football club and if they decide it’s too risky to come in, that’s fine by me," Jack added.

The manager said his squad is light in numbers and he is hoping to tie up several loan deals in the next week.
