Rothes trial for foreign imports

FOREIGN IMPORTS may be common in British football nowadays, but Highland League Rothes would be one of the last clubs expected to attract players from overseas.

Yet the MacKessack Park clubfielded exotically-named duo Hugo Costa and Taha Abadi as trialists in the midweek friendly against Scottish League Elgin City.

The Aberdeen university pair have been trying out for Rothes, and both will be assessed by manager Graham McBeath between now and the big North Cup kick off against Lossiemouth on July 27.

Striker Abadi even netted with a header in the Speysiders’ 4-1 defeat, but it was the imposing Costa who made more of an impression with McBeath.

“Scott Robison’s dad was refereeing a game and told us about Hugo so we invited him along,” Graeme said. “He’s Portuguese and studying business management in Aberdeen.

“He’s one we’re keen on because he’s got a bit of physique and power about him. “He’s very keen and has a good attitude, and I think he’s got a chance of getting a contract here.”

“Taha is another who asked to train with us. He’s played mainly amateur football but we’ll take a look at him and assess him.”
