Sandra's lightning start throws her opponent
SEVEN medals in seven months have made 2013 a memorable year for Moray judo ace Sandra Pirie.
The Elgin Judo Club senior, who is ranked number 2 in Scotland for her category, won gold at the recent City of Culture competition in Londonderry.
Sandra (25) beat her first opponent in Northern Ireland with the help of a throw in the first two seconds of the match, before going on to hold her second opponent down for 19 seconds on her way to victory.
She now has four gold medals, two silvers and a bronze to her name in competitive action, little over halfway through her season.
Sandra, who is also ranked 6th in the UK, represented Scotland at the British national teams competition in Walsall. She performing superbly to win all her fights and also gaining 30 points towards her 2nd Dan as Scotland ended up with the silver medal.
Sandra and her mother, Audrey, who is a coach at the Elgin club, have also secured an interview to become official volunteers for judo at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year.
Audrey said they both hope to be selected so they can show Scotland can give the best games ever and be part of a similar atmosphere that they received as Games Maker volunteers at the Paralympics in London last year.
Both Sandra and Audrey have also been chosen to be part of the European Judo Championships in October as refereeing officials in Glasgow, an opportunity they are viewing as a huge step up from national competitions.
