Elgin City women’s football team twice peg back Premier League 2 hosts St Johnstone before seeing their brave Scottish Cup run ended by Perth hosts
Elgin City women’s football team saw their Scottish Cup run ended despite a battling performance in Perth.
Four wins including a victory over a side two leagues above them took City to the last 16 of the competition.
They faced St Johnstone, who play in the Scottish Women’s Premier League 2 at the Riverside Stadium, home of Jeanfield Swifts.
Two goals by Elgin striker Mia Lundberg twice pegged Saints back to 2-2, before two more home goals in the final quarter of the game edged the favourites into the quarter-finals.
Elgin manager Michael Morrison said he was proud of the team’s efforts, not only in testing a strong opponent but in getting to this stage of the tournament.
St Johnstone took an early lead before Norwegian star Lundberg rounded the goalkeeper to level ten minutes later.
It stayed 1-1 at half time and although Saints regained their advantage early in the second half, another Lundberg finish a minute later pegged the Perth ladies back.
When Saints took the lead for the third time on 68 minutes, they were able to add a fourth five minutes later and a comeback proved to be just beyond City.
