Buckie Thistle lose to Dundee United in cup competition at Victoria Park for second week running as Tannadice club’s B team triumph in SPFL Trust Trophy
Buckie Thistle exited the SPFL Trust Trophy at the first hurdle on Tuesday night.
Having lost 5-2 to United’s first team in the Premier Sports Cup group stages a week earlier, Buckie faced up to some of the same players in the return match as the Tannadice club fielded a strong team.
Former Celtic striker Tony Watt led United’s front line, and the visitors led at the break through a goal by Owen Stirton, who featured in their first team at Victoria Park last week.
Josh Peters’ second goal of the season drew Buckie level shortly after the break.
The match was heading for penalties when United pounced in the final ten minutes, scoring through Zeke Cameron and sub Lewis O’Donnell to win the tie.
United’s victory set up a Dundee derby in the second round as they now meet Dundee B, who were 2-0 winners over Formartine United.
While two Highland League sides were knocked out, the other two in action on Tuesday night progressed to round two.
Banks o’ Dee earned a visit to Elgin City on August 13 by edging out Aberdeen’s B team 1-0, Michael Philipson getting the goal.
Fraserburgh hosted Hearts’ B team and Sean Butcher’s 73rd minute strike cancelled out the Jam Tarts’ first half goal to force a penalty shoot-out.
Both teams missed one of their original five kicks and when Hearts also missed their sixth, Bryan Hay netted for Broch to book a home tie against Forfar Athletic on August 13.
The fifth and final Highland League club in the competition, Brechin City host St Johnstone B tonight.
