Rothes Football Club fail to end ten-month wait over 30 matches for a victory as Deveronvale hit back from 2-0 down to steal glory at Mackessack Park

The winless run extends to 30 matches after a heartbreaking finish.

Rothes once again looked poised to pick up their first victory since November when they led Deveronvale 2-0 going into the final quarter of last night’s Highland League clash.

After 26 defeats and three draws since beating Turriff on November 2 last year, Ronnie Sharp’s men were closing in on a long-awaited win bonus.

However, the Speysiders also led Wick by two goals on Saturday and were 3-2 up in the 95th minute, only to be foiled at the very end.

Yet again, a young and inexperienced Rothes team couldn’t maintain their advantage as Deveronvale pulled level with ten minutes to go, and ran in three more goals for a 5-2 victory.

Saturday’s hat-trick hero Jake Thomson was on target for Rothes again, scoring their second goal on 19 minutes after Brodie Mitchell had given them an early lead.

Vale had come back from 2-0 down to beat derby rivals Buckie Thistle 3-2 on Saturday, but when they failed to score by the midway point of the second half there was real hope that the Speysiders’ run was about to end.

But a Fergus Alberts goal on 68 minutes was the catalyst for a comeback.

Rothes still led going into the final ten minutes, until a strike by Vale player boss Garry Wood squared the contest.

The roof then caved in on the home challenge, as Vale defender Lucas Smith scored on his debut and further goals by Olek Dlugosz and Jack Mitchell in a devastating five minute spell guided the visitors to the three points.
