Elgin City women’s football team march through to first-ever semi-final in Scottish Power Regional League Cup after victory over Stewarton Annick Ladies at Gleaner Arena
Elgin City’s women’s football team bounced back from their Scottish Cup disappointment to reach their first-ever semi-final.
City just missed out on a place in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup when they were edged out 4-2 at Premier League 2 side St Johnstone last week.
They quickly got back on track with another victory in the Scottish Power Regional League Cup on Sunday.
Elgin defeated Stewart Annick Ladies 7-1 at the Gleaner Arena to make it through to the last four of the competition in only their second season.
Top scorer Mia Lundberg netted a hat-trick to inspire the victory.
The hot shot Norwegian raced through to score twice inside the opening 18 minutes, although Stewarton quickly got a goal back.
Elgin held their slender advantage until the closing minutes of the first half when they hit their opponents with a double whammy.
Sarah Westwood struck just before the break and Lily Morrison made it 4-1 from the penalty spot.
Lundberg completed her treble on the hour mark - her 26th goal of the season - and sub Darcy Matheson added a sixth just a few minutes after coming on, scoring for the 19th time this term.
The best goal was saved for last, a long range power effort from Westwood for her second of the afternoon to complete a great afternoon’s work for the home team.
Elgin will join Edinburgh Uni Thistle, Cambusdoon and Cumbernauld Colts in the semi-final draw.
This weekend, it’s back to league business in the SWFL North division and a top-of-the-table clash with leaders Ross County.
The match is played at Elgin’s Gleaner Arena on Sunday at 4pm, and something had to give with both sides defending 100 per cent records.
County lead the way with seven wins out of seven while City have won all six of their league encounters so far and will be keen to make it a lucky seven.
