ELGIN City will only become a consistent force in League 2 if they learn to become more streetwise, says manager Gavin Price.

City slipped to a surprise 4-2 home defeat to second-bottom Berwick Rangers on Saturday, after which Price accused his team of being too “nice”.

The Black and Whites conceded two sloppy goals in a five-minute spell in the first half to leave them with plenty to do after the break.

Twice they got back in it with Jon Paul McGovern’s first for the club and Darryl McHardy’s finish from a corner pulling City back to within a goal, only to concede another within minutes each time.

Price said: “These goals we are conceding, you’ve got to be stronger for it not to happen.

“We tried to talk to them before the game about how we are a nice footballing team, but to win games consistently and to get results consistently you need to be a bit more streetwise and a bit tougher and not just nice.

“What the players should glean from the Berwick game is that you need both aspects to win football games and can’t rely on being a nice team all the time.”

Price’s mission to help make Elgin more consistent is highlighted by his team’s results in their last ten league games.

City have won five and lost five with every victory followed immediately by a defeat.

They will hope that pattern continues for one more week when they play host to Clyde on Saturday.
