SHANE Sutherland is on the Elgin City comeback trail after more than six months out injured.

City manager Jim Weir revealed his star striker has stepped up his training levels as he recovers from a cruciate knee operation.

Sutherland was League 2 player of the year last season after scoring 24 goals in all competitions.

He then picked up his knee injury in February and bar a brief substitute’s appearance in a game at Cowdenbeath he hasn’t played since.

Weir said: “The great news is that Shane started jogging today (Saturday) so we know he’s on schedule for his return about December/ January, fingers crossed.

“In a crucial few months coming up we will be working on getting a crucial player beck for the team.”

City failed to win in 18 competitive matches without Sutherland dating back to last February.

That run ended with an Irn Bru Cup win at Hibernian Colts and the Black and Whites have now hit a purple patch.

Saturday’s 2-0 win against League of Ireland side Bray Wanderers in the second round of the Irn Bru Cup was their fourth consecutive victory.

Second half goals by Chris Dodd and Jordan Allan earned Elgin a place in Tuesday’s draw for the last 16.
