The Maroons’ all-time record goal scorer will bring the curtain down on his football career next summer, but plans to go out on a high.

Even with his club playing a shortened 16-game league season, Cammy is targeting 20 goals and some silverware to finish his playing days in some style.

He resumed pre-season training last week, and insisted he is in great shape for the proposed October 17 start to the campaign.

“I’ve actually had a lot more time to work on fitness so it’s probably the fittest I’ve ever felt coming into a season,” he said.

“That was something I wanted to do, with me having it in mind that it was going to be my last season. I wanted to give it everything I’ve got, so I’ve got myself in really good shape going into the new season.”

That’s bad news for opposing defences who might be thinking at the age of 33, Cammy’s best days were behind him.

The striker won the Highland League top scorer prize last season, and would dearly love to repeat the feat and help shoot Keith to their first trophy in eight years.

He has one goal target left to try and achieve, as he is still five goals short of netting 350 in Highland League football from his time at Keith and a spell at Formartine United.

“Hopefully early doors I’ll be able to get to that milestone and then kick on from there.

“The league will be difficult for us but you never know and with the season being so short. With the cups, I would love to finish off by winning some sort of silverware at Keith.

“It’s been a few years since I last lifted the Highland League Cup in 2013 so it would be amazing to finish on a high.”

Cammy is confident that the Maroons can make some progress up the league table if they hit the ground running.

“It’s a little bit of a sprint to the finish. You could have a mix-up of quite a few teams at the top, and similarly down at the bottom if you don’t get some wins on the board early, you could be cast adrift with not enough games to catch up.

“So it’s important to get off to a good start and try and wrap up three or four wins straight away, then you set yourself up in a good place.

“But I think there will be quite a few teams with a potential interest in the title.”

Of course, players often change their mind about quitting the sport they love, but Keith’s talisman revealed he is unlikely to be persuaded to carry on beyond next summer.

“I spoke to Deano [manager Dean Donaldson] over the summer and just with
us having the two kids and only 14 months between them, I have to think of my family.

“I don’t think I’ll change my mind. I’ll be 34 next summer and I have pretty much made my mind up.

“Come the end of the season I think that will be me.”
