Strathlene four day open sees trophy glory for Welsh golfers
Two of the trophies from a four day golf open are on their way south to Wales.
Strathlene Golf Club’s Admiral’s Restaurant and Bar Four Day Open saw the Banffshire Advertiser and Badenoch Cups head to Padeswood in Wales.
This was not the only silverware to find itself on its travels, the Gordon Cup going down the road to Aberdeen.
The scratch Craigendarroch Cup stayed put at Strathlene, with an all-home final, Craig Bain coming out on top 2&1 over Bruce Thompson.
In the Badenoch Cup, Padeswood & Buckley golfer Mal Owens defended his title from last year, overcoming Johnathan Geddes 2&1.
Meanwhile, in the Banffshire Advertiser Cup, fellow Padeswood & Buckley golfer David Williams emerged victorious over the host club’s Iain Wilson at the 19th hole.
The Gordon Cup went back down the road to Murcar Golf Club thanks to the efforts of Bill Imlach, who triumphed 2&1 over Charlie McKay from Cullen.
Attendance was 122, down on last year’s figure of 148, with much of the golf played in glorious summer conditions.
Reflecting on a success open tournament, Strathlene club captain Zander Brandt said: “The four day open went very well, the weather and playing conditions were really good throughout.
“The attendance was slightly down on last year although all the club competitions have been down a bit this year.
“Mal came back to defend and retain his title. The Welsh guys have been coming up here for something like 14 years so they know the course very well.
“The scratch final was a very high standard as usual, the matches were very close. The handicap trophies were also very hard fought.
“This was the first year that the Admiral’s Restaurant and Bar has been our main sponsor and we’re delighted to be on board with them.”
