The Moray welfare league champions’ run of five wins was ended by Jordan Whitta’s late intervention to earn a 1-1 draw.

Buckie United had recently overtaken the Brochers at the top of the table – albeit with a game more played – and they stretched their lead at the top by seeing off coast rivals Cullen.

Bishopmill dominated from the off at Burghead and missed a host of chances to take the lead, they were punished when Burghead were awarded a penalty after Steven Shand was fouled in the box, and John Harrold scored from the spot.

Into the second half, Harrold and Shand missed Broch chances but Rovers chased hard for an equaliser and when several close range openings weren’t taken, it didn’t look like it was going to be their night. However, player-manager Liam McKidd’s long ball forward picked out Whitta who tucked it away to grab Bish a late leveller.

Buckie United won 5-2 at Cullen to remain top while Hopeman slid into second spot ahead of neighbours Burghead following their 3-0 success over RAF Lossiemouth at the air base.

At the other end of the table, Banff Rovers got off the mark with a win at Portsoy. They took the lead on 15 minutes when Danny Simpson headed in from a corner. Portsoy equalised five minutes later through Mick Smith before Rory Davidson’s 25-yard free-kick restored Rovers’ lead on the half hour and they never looked back from there. Bradley Henderson netted a hat-trick to seal a 5-1 win which left ‘Soy pointless at the bottom.
