Aldi staff at the Elgin store are amongst employees being provided with face masks by the supermarket giant.

.

Staff will be given the option of choosing to wear the masks or not.

It follows the provision of gloves and perspex till screens by Aldi to help protect employees from coronavirus.

Yesterday the Scottish Government said it was recommending the use of face masks as a "precautionary measure" in circumstances where social distancing might be difficult, such as on public transport or in shops.

The recommendation came despite First Minister Nicola Sturgeon describing the evidence for their usefulness as "relatively weak".

The supermarket has also introduced a voucher scheme, to make it easier for volunteers to buy food on behalf of the vulnerable and those who are self-isolating.

Aldi states, in addition, that it is supporting home producers by agreeing to buy additional volumes of British beef from farmers faced with surpluses due to the closure of restaurants and catering businesses.

The supermarket is also increasing orders of spring plants which would otherwise be thrown away.
