AN annual Elgin darts tournament that takes place in memory of a well-known local fundraiser is set to return.

The Jean Ross Memorial Darts Tournament will take place at the Ex-Services Club on Elgin High Street on Sunday, August 28, starting at 1pm.

Jean Ross, originally from Lossiemouth, was a well-known fundraiser – raising thousands for charity before her passing after a stroke in August 2007.

An annual darts tournament has been played in her memory since the first anniversary of her death – in 2008 – with funds going to the British Heart Foundation and Macmillan Nurses.

The event is organised by her son, Dougie Ross, who works for event sponsors C+R Taxis.

He said: "My mum raised money for many, many charities in the past and these were her favourites. They were the closest to my mum's heart.

"She did give to other charities. Everybody that knew my mum knew how great a person she was. She was a fantastic woman and is very sadly missed.

"We always have a great time and great turnout at the memorial events. We have raised a lot of money for both charities since 2008.

"People come for enjoyment. Some come to watch and help raise money for good causes – you don't have to be great at darts to get involved, it's just a great day raising money for great causes.

"The Ex-Services Club is a nice venue and is big. It's friendly for people in wheelchairs or with difficulties walking, too."

The event – returning after a coronavirus-enforced pause – will see a singles tournament, mixed tournament and a children's tournament played. Winners will be presented with trophies.

It's likely to run until 6 or 7pm, with plenty of drinks at the bar and food, made by Patricia Ross, Jean's daughter, to keep people going. There will also be a raffle. Tickets can be bought by ringing Patricia on 07794676625.

All will be made welcome and people can turn up at the Ex-Services Club on the day.
