A firm of architects has been appointed to lead the redevelopment of Elgin Town Hall.

LDN Architects have been awarded the contract as part of the £31.6 million plans to create a 'Cultural Quarter' in the town.

Work will be carried out to make 1960s building more user-friendly, improve its facilities and acoustics as well as what's called a 'multi-use studio space'.

LDN were selected following a two-stage public procurement process, which generated 23 notes of interest from architecture practices around the UK.

They are said to have impressed with their "clear and thoughtful approach, and creative and original concept".

The design team which they will lead includes Narro (structural and civil engineers), Harley Haddow (building services), Ironside Farrar (landscape architect), CharcoalBlue (theatre consultant), Sandy Brown (acoustic consultant) and OFR (fire engineer).

Marc Macrae, who chairs Moray Council's economic development committee, said: "It’s great to see this milestone reached. There are some exciting developments ahead."

Stuart MacKellar, a partner at LDN Architects added: "We are thrilled to have been appointed.

"Working locally, Elgin is a place that is very close to our hearts.

"It makes it all the more meaningful to develop access to the performing arts, hopefully in a way that inspires and excites."

Control of the town hall was transferred by the council five years ago.

Jackie Andrews chairs Elgin Town Hall for the Community, the group of volunteers who run it now.

She said: "The town hall currently welcomes over 80,000 visits a year. We’re excited to see what heights can be reached with the redevelopment of the space."
