AS the country marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, The Northern Scot has 10 copies of a remarkable look at Moray's memories of World War Two to give away.

Pauline Taylor, then editor of the newspaper, compiled and edited "The People's War" in 2005 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of WW2.

Using first hand recollections from people who lived through the war, Pauline brought together a terrific historical record of life during the war.

From those who saw active service abroad on the frontline, to those who served the war effort back home, the 295-page living history book was published in 2005.

To mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day we thought it would be fitting to remind you of the publication and give 10 readers the chance to win a copy.

Pauline wrote in 2005: "I do not subscribe to the view that we should forget what happened in 1939-45; that the memories of war should be allowed to die with those who experienced them.

"We have a responsibility to keep alive the memory of the agony of war and its causes, so that we can ensure that it never happens again.

"Many books have been written about battles, but few about the lives of those who took part, or who waited back home for the outcome. This is the purpose of this book, to record for future generations what was was like for ordinary people, whether at the front or the home front."

Pauline thanked many people for their support in producing the book, most notably the late Air Vice Marshal George Chesworth, former Lord Lieutenant of Moray.

"But most of all, thank you to all the readers of The Northern Scot who answered the question "What did you do in the war?" so spendidly, contacting me with the personal, occasionally funny, but often painful memories of World War II.

"It has been a privilege and, in many cases, a humbling experience to listen to your stories."

The first 10 readers to email us will win their own copy of this fantastic keepsake from history.
