A TRIO of 1960s bands are set to rock Elgin at the MacMoray Family Easter Festival in April.

The Bay City Rollers, Nazareth and Sweet have been confirmed for the weekend-long event, due to take place on April 29 and 30, 2023.

They add to 90s pop groups Five and B*Witched, who were the first acts announced for MacMoray last Friday.

Great excitement has come with the announcement of the return of MacMoray, which debuted in April, with more than a quarter of tickets already sold.

Organiser Andy MacDonald said the five bands confirmed so far highlight the festival's diversity. He also talked about future ticket release dates.

"I love the variety of artists we have coming to MacMoray as there is something for everyone," he said.

"So far, after the two announcements last week, we have sold 38 per cent of VIP tickets and 28 per cent of total standard tickets.

"Weekend tickets are available now, and day tickets will be released on January 6.

"I'm extremely grateful for the response we have had so far, not just from the sheer amount of tickets sold already but from the bands – who are all really excited to play at MacMoray."

The Bay City Rollers, formed in 1964, broke into the mainstream in the middle of the 1970s with hits such as 'Bye Bye, Baby', 'Give a Little Love' and Scottish football favourite 'Shang-A-Lang'.

Three of the bands current members joined in 2018, with Stuart "Woody" Wood having joined the band in 1974, shortly before their boom.

Nazareth, who formed in 1968, continue to have a passionate following – with 2.5 million monthly listeners on popular streaming website Spotify.

Their biggest hit was a cover of the song 'Love Hurts' which came on their 1975 album Hair of the Dog.

Bassist Pete Agnew has been with the band since its formation. He talked of his excitement at coming to Elgin.

He said: "We have been hearing great things about this festival, so we are really looking forward to playing at it.

"I hope you are looking forward to hearing us – April 30, 2023, MacMoray Festival in Elgin – it's going to be a riot."

Glam rock band The Sweet, who also rose to prominence in the 70s, will also play at MacMoray.

The fourpiece includes guitarist Andy Scott, who has been with the group since 1970.

A total of 14 bands will play across the two days of the festival. The nine bands yet to be announced will be confirmed first in The Northern Scot.
