TWO boys – aged 11 and 12 – have been linked to a large blaze that took hold of a derelict building in Lossiemouth at the weekend.

The fire at Sunbank House, a two-storey building at Sunbank Quarry in Lossie, began between 7pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, September 30.

A total of nine fire appliances were called to the scene and, due to the serious nature of the fire, police warned locals against opening windows in their homes.

In addition, the A941 into Lossiemouth was closed overnight from Saturday into Sunday between its junction with the B9135 to Muirton and Inchbroom Road.

Police have now confirmed that two youngsters have been referred to a Moray Council team that works with offenders between eight and 18 years old in relation to the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Two male youths, aged 11 and 12, have been referred to the Youth Justice Management Team following a suspicious fire at Sunbank House in Lossiemouth.

"Police were alerted to the fire around 7.45pm on Saturday, September 30, 2023."

The fire brigade were alerted to the blaze around 20 minutes earlier – and took a host of appliances to extinguish the flames.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: “We were alerted at 7.25pm on Saturday, September 30, to reports of a building fire on Sunbank Quarry, Lossiemouth.

“Operations Control mobilised six fire appliances and specialist resources to the scene to extinguish the fire affecting a two-storey derelict building.
