A group of parents and Moray's MP are calling for a crossing to be built outside Bishopmill Primary School in Elgin.

The call comes amid fears that an accident is overdue on Morriston Road because of how busy it becomes, especially at the start and end of the school day.

A new crossing is scheduled to be built in the near future about 100 yards away outside Elgin Academy.

However the parents believe Moray Council has chosen the wrong place.

Instead, they want it sited besides the primary school where it is more likely to be used by younger children.

Alison Hedley, the recently appointed chair of the school's parent council, said that concerns have been raised for well over a decade.

These, she added, had grown worse since the council did away with school crossing patrollers two years ago.

Alison, whose children Leo (8) and Aria (7) go to Bishopmill, said: "I walk them to school because I can't allow them to cross Morriston Road by themselves.

"And I'm certainly not alone in thinking it's dangerous.

"Some other parents have done a lot of work on social media to highlight the issue.

"Meanwhile, over 50 emails have been sent to the council.

"So far, though, there's been no obvious consultation with either the primary school or ourselves."

Speaking outside the school on Wednesday afternoon, Moray's MP Douglas Ross stated he'd witnessed children walking out between parked cars.

Adding that a crossing was needed, he said: "A number of parents have been in contact with me to say how concerned they are – and I can understand why.

"We want to encourage youngsters to walk to school, but you have to give them a safe route."
