A man has been sentenced after police raided a remote croft near Keith to look for firearms and found a cannabis farm there instead.

Officers discovered no weapons at Moss-side Croft on August 22 last year.

However a humming sound plus the smell of cannabis led them to a building outside.

Speaking at Inverness Sheriff Court, fiscal depute Robert Weir said: "The outhouse was locked and there was a CCTV camera fitted to it."

Mr Weir stated that the police obtained a drugs search warrant.

Once within the outbuilding they found two large tents containing a total of 101 cannabis plants at various stages of maturity.

The total value of the haul ranged from £20,200 to £81,210.

This discovery led to the arrest of Andrew Savage, whose address was given in court papers as Cumming Street, Keith.

A police interview was carried out with the 31-year-old while a responsible adult was present in the room.

During this Savage stated that he had been growing the drug for other people.

Savage appeared in court again today to be sentenced, having already admitted being involved in the production of cannabis at a previous appearance.

Sheriff Robert Frazer ordered him to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work for the community.

A 7pm-7am curfew was also imposed on him for the next four months.

Savage must also undergo addiction treatment.

Defence solicitor Brent Lockie said: "He has moved away from his previous associates and is motivated to change."
