Asda in Elgin has its own celebrity in the shape of seven-year-old Xander Leiper.

Each time the youngster visits the store he gets to sit on the checkout and scan in the items his family have bought.

It all began earlier this year when Xander first told supermarket worker Helen Taylor he'd love to have a go ‘have a go on the checkouts’.

She granted his wish and gave him his own Asda green t-shirt complete with name badge.

Helen, who started worked at the store 31 years ago, said: "Every week he scans the shopping.

"He's been doing it for about three months now and he's very good and very fast.

"I step to the side, and he takes my seat and away he goes. It makes his day.

"The first day he got his Asda t-shirt he was like a celebrity with everyone crowding around him."

Helen, a grandmother of three, added: "Xander is such a lovely little boy. You just want to cuddle him."

Xander visits the store with his dad Brian and 13-year-old brother Jeremiah.

Brian said: "Helen is really good with him. Xander won't go to another till – it has to be hers.

"She's a good laugh and an asset to the store."
