VOLUNTEERS donated 2100 hours last year to run an Elgin charity shop.

Barnardo's Scotland has praised the team of 10 men and women who clocked up the voluntary hours by checking, steaming and labelling stock, serving customers and keeping the tills ringing.

As part of Volunteers' Week, which runs from June 1-7, they are calling for more people to get involved.

Barnardo’s Scotland’s volunteering adviser Alison McLaughlin said: "Our local stores play a vital role in raising much-needed funds to maintain our work across Scotland.

"Some volunteers come in for just an hour each week, others for much longer, but every effort is sincerely appreciated."

Volunteers can choose from a variety of roles – from helping behind the scenes by recycling, sorting and pricing the donations to helping on the shop-floor by arranging window displays, styling mannequins or serving at the till.

The charity is also promoting its Fortnight of Fun which offers students the opportunity to volunteer in their local store over the summer holidays, gaining work experience and boosting their CV.

Barnardo's Scotland operates more than 100 shops across the country which directly support its work, helping more than 16,300 children and young people in over 140 specialised community-based services across the country.
