A national Clap for Carers is planned for tonight at 8pm.

People are being urged to stand at the doorstep or on their balcony tonight in a nationwide simultaneous show of appreciation of the NHS staff and other carers who are looking after people ill with Covid-19.

As the number of cases across the UK continue to rise, emergency departments across the NHS are bracing themselves for a surge of cases in the next few weeks.

The clap will be for all health staff - doctors, nurses, cleaners, porters - who are putting themselves at risk to look after people.

More health staff are falling ill with the virus themselves.
