CONCERN has been expressed after 16 people were charged for traffic offences near the entrance of New Elgin Primary.

The drivers were charged for minor parking offences, for failing to stop at a pedestrian crossing and for not stopping at school crossing patrollers.

This comes as Moray Council are set to get rid of all lollipop people as part of the council's budget for the forthcoming financial year.

Local officers from the Elgin Community Policing Team carried out a road safety operation between March 7-11 after concerns were expressed by members of the public.

The head teacher of New Elgin Primary School, Elaine Milne, said: “We have been working closely all session with the police and through our Junior Road Safety Officers to attempt to reduce the dangers caused by drivers around New Elgin Primary.

"The safety of our children travelling to and from school is of paramount importance to us and situations such as these cause us great concern.”

Community officer PC Jad Leach said: “We have carried out this operation in response to concerns from staff and parents about driver behaviour around local schools.

“It is important that drivers take great care at all times, but especially in the vicinity of our schools.

"Road safety is a policing priority for us and one we will continue to focus on, enforcing legislation where necessary as we all have a responsibility to use the roads safely. Operations of this type will continue in the Moray area and if you have any concerns report these to police on 101."
