Cup of tea and a chat with a friend can be a 'life-saver say Samaritans

A CUP of tea and a chat is all you need to turn a bad day around.

The simple act of listening to someone who is struggling with their emotions could be transformative.

The third Monday in January has often been referred to as 'Blue Monday', however, Samaritans Elgin wants to dispel the myth that it is the most difficult day of the year.

Blue Monday was a stunt originally dreamed up to sell holidays.

"We all have our good days and our bad days – and these aren’t dictated by the calendar", said Fiona Braidwood, director of Samaritans Elgin.

"My fellow volunteers and I at Samaritans’ Elgin branch are well aware of the benefits of reaching out and connecting – whether that’s with a relative, friend or by calling one of us."

She urged people to reach out to a friend who might be lonely, isolated or struggling with their mental health.

"As our branch celebrates its 50th anniversary, we know that you don’t need to be a doctor, surgeon or superhero to potentially save someone’s life – you just need to listen.

"Picking up the phone to a friend or colleague you might not have seen for a while and inviting them out for a cuppa is simple, and could have a much bigger impact than you will ever know.

"If you’re not sure what to say, don’t worry – just relax and try to ask open questions that need more than a yes or a no answer."

Fiona's advice is that when someone opens up, focus on them, put your phone away.

"Just listen and show them you care.
