THE Dark Sky Park in Tomintoul and Glenlivet, the most northerly of its kind in the UK, will be the site of a 'Star Party' next weekend as the days become shorter and star gazing conditions become better.

The area is one of best places in the world for stargazing.
The area is one of best places in the world for stargazing.

The weekend will kick off on Friday, September 23 with headline talks, films and walks.

The party will continue into the weekend with an expert led star gazing session, story walks, talks and workshops all led by Astronomy experts.

The area was awarded international Dark Sky status in 2018 to recognise the quality of the night skies and the clarity in which they can be viewed in the area.

That has made Tomintoul and Glenlivet one of the best areas in the world to see natural wonders such as the Aurora Borealis and the Milky Way.

Tilly Smith, Chair of Tomintoul and Glenlivet Development Trust, said: "Our dark skies are unique and accessible to everyone, every night. Our Star Party event is a great opportunity to come and learn from some experts and have some fun."

Sam Robinson, Secretary of Cairngorm Astronomy Group, added: "Our Star Party, held in the Cairngorm Dark Sky park is a great opportunity to come and experience the natural wonder of our dark skies.

"A fantastic programme of activities has been arranged including talks from experts such as Pete Sherman and Dr Rita Tojeiro."

The event will coincide with Jupiter in opposition which is when the planet appears at its brightest and largest.

The party will begin at The Richmond Memorial Hall with activities led by Dark Sky Ranger Elizabeth Tindal.
